Why the card feels so hard

The card isn't too hard. The order is.

After the Charleston most of us pick up the card and read it top to bottom, checking 13 tiles against more than fifty lines while three people wait. That's a memory job, and memory is the first thing to slip when you feel rushed.

The players who always seem to know what to do look at their rack first. A quick count of evens, odds and winds rules out most of the card before they open it.

The Rack-First Kit turns that habit into three steps you can practice at your kitchen table.

How it works

Three glances before the first pass

1

Count

Count your tiles by family: evens, odds, 3-6-9, winds and dragons, pairs. The card stays face down.

2

Point

Your biggest families point to one or two sections. Evens beat odds by 2 or more? Open 2468.

3

Pick

Keep two lines that share tiles and pass whatever helps neither.

Try it on a real practice rack

Tap 1 · Count. You won't need the card for this step.

Practice rack from the Playbook, not a hand from the official card.

During the hand, three quick checks tell you when to switch lines and when to stop feeding the table: Check · Count the dead · Defend.

What changes

Your next game, before and after

Reading the card first

  • Line after line, losing your place when someone talks
  • Six hands in your head and none of them getting built
  • Passing whatever, just to end the quiet
  • Starting over every April

Reading your rack first

  • The card opened to one or two sections
  • Two lines that share tiles, so you can slide when one dies
  • Three tiles passed on purpose
  • The same method with the new card, 2027 maps included

Is it for you?

Two friends at a mahjong table looking at a Playbook page on an iPad

Yes, if you...

  • know the basics but freeze after the Charleston
  • are newer and the card still looks like a wall of numbers
  • have played for years and hit a drought with this year's card
  • would rather practice at home than in front of the table

Not for you if you...

  • play Riichi, Chinese or Hong Kong mahjong
  • want a copy of the hands so you can skip buying the card

The 10-Game Guarantee

Questions

Questions players ask

Is this a copy of the NMJL card?

No. We never reprint the League's hands. You'll need your own official 2026 card. The kit refers to sections and line numbers, in the same order as your card.

I'm a beginner. Is it too advanced?

No. The Playbook starts with how to look at a rack and has a glossary of the words people use at the table. If you've had a lesson or watched a beginner video, you're ready.

I've played for years. Will it help me?

Yes. The kit isn't a rules course; it's the order you decide in. Long-time players will probably spend most of their time in the Section Maps and the three checks during the hand.

What do I get, and how?

Right after checkout you get an email with links to 8 separate PDF files. Print them at home on US Letter paper or read them on a tablet. Nothing is shipped; the photos show the kit printed out.

Can I read it on my iPad or phone?

Yes. On an iPad the pages show at full size. On a phone, turn it sideways and zoom in. No app and no password.

What happens when the new card comes out?

The method doesn't depend on this year's hands. Your 2027 Section Maps are emailed within 14 days of the new card's release, included in your purchase.

What if it doesn't work for me?

Play 10 games with the method. If the card doesn't feel smaller and the Charleston doesn't feel calmer, write to us at mahjongstrategyschool@gmail.com within 60 days and we'll refund you. Keep the Cheat Card.
